Uncovered: Resurfaced is an RPG Maker MV game made during Generation 4. It's a remake of the Generation 2 story, Uncovered, and is considered to be the true canon version of that story's events.
On the night of his 21st birthday, Alex goes out drinking with friends, subsequently blacking out and waking up in a strange new world. He's found by Emily, who watches over him and teaches him the workings of the new world he's found himself in.
The two soon have an encounter with a group known as The Shadow Clan, which are slowly revealed to have a firm grasp on Emvi. This group, seeking to revive an ancient evil in order to destroy and rebuild the world, have slowly gained more and more power to do as they please, with your group being the only ones willing to put up any resistance.
The original Uncovered is often cited as being a poorly-executed story with lots of potential. Most complaints, from both Gaboza and players of the game, stem from the same three problems:
Boring, monotonous battle system
Inconsistently-paced plot and rushed climax/ending
Seemingly general lack of story direction
Uncovered: Resurfaced sought out to fix a lot of these issues, by doing things such as:
Giving every different party member vastly different movesets, stat spreads, and equipment capabilities
Introducing a wider variety of enemies so no two battles feel the same
Having bosses challenge the meta for that point in the game, requiring out-of-the-box thinking as the game progresses
Spending time on fleshing out the vast world of Emvi
Implementing actual backtracking capabilities, as well as fast travel
Making it so something can always be done to move the plot forward, but giving players room to relax and explore the environment
Giving events time to play out and not throwing everything at the player at once
The game's playtester, Jakob Brill (Melakozmo) had strong, genuine, and positive reactions to many story events, even despite having played the original game. He thoroughly enjoyed the game's battle system, praising it multiple times for allowing the employment of many creative strategies as well as having to think of the optimal strategy to use for the game's harder fights.
Other friends who have spectated the story's gameplay have commented on the notable step up from the original.
Gaboza has stated he would likely rate the story a 9/10 in the 'Ranking Every Gaboza Story' video series, a notable step up from the original game's rating of 6/10.
