Characters
Flipside follows Salas, who aims to start a clothing brand, Magic Touch, with his best friends, Renner and Viv. Salas hopes to get accepted into his dream university to pursue a business degree with a full ride scholarship, as he can't afford attending otherwise.
Salas and his friends each saved up $5,000 (totaling $15,000) to open a business account and start Magic Touch. Since Salas' mother works at the bank and he'd be the best at sneaking out of school unattended, he's entrusted with his friends' savings as he heads to the bank. However, on the way, he gets an e-mail explaining that while he's been accepted into his dream college, he has been denied a scholarship. For a brief moment, Salas wrestles with the idea of using the money to attend college.
Four years later, Salas is working with his friends in their small Magic Touch building, the three of them working all day, every day and making just enough money to survive and keep the business afloat. After a long day of the usual work, Renner takes Salas home, and Salas awakens the next morning to find everything almost the same... he heads to work, and is attacked by alternate versions of his friends, claiming he has some audacity to show his face after... spending all of their money and attending college?!
In this new world, known as the flipside (also flipped universe), when Salas wrestled with the idea of spending his friends' money on pursuing a business degree, he went for it, and Magic Touch became a Fortune 500 company in just a few years, with Salas' alternate self as the self-absorbed CEO.

Concepts for very early versions of what would eventually become Flipside date as far back as March 2020. At the time, Gaboza had seen movies such as Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice, Menace II Society, Juice, and more, and wanted to do his own take on a story told in an inner city atmosphere.
Drafts for the story never left Gaboza's notes, but it was then tentatively titled Old School, with brief summaries on the plot and characters. Though the characters were all unnamed, the notes for this story's protagonist's personality would later become the basis for Salas. Both Renner and Flipped Renner's designs and personalities, to some extent, were also outlined in these notes.
There aren't many things showing either Viv or Flipped Viv's development, except some messages from Gaboza to a friend, jokingly reading:
"One Asian girl wasn't enough for [him] to read SC"
"Flipside has two"
"Do you think that's enough"
In April 2024, the popular rhythm game, Friday Night Funkin' released an update, adding "WeekEnd 1" to the game. Gaboza, being a long-time fan of both the game as well as a user of the Newgrounds site since early childhood, admitted to OG Salas' design very possibly being subconsciously inspired by Pico, a Friday Night Funkin' character and former Newgrounds mascot; save for Salas' gapped teeth, which were originally intended to be the Generation 4 protagonist mark.
A friend would later poke fun at Gaboza for the Flipside trio's resemblances to Pico, Darnell, and Nene at a glance.
Scripting for Flipside initially began on July 22, 2024, with a trial version of the script containing Chapters 0 and 1 released later that week and a trial reading period opened to everyone; which lasted from July 26 to August 8. Flipside was originally the second Generation 4 script to start being written, but with World-Class Investigation: Poison Ivy eventually being repurposed into World-Class Investigation: Zer0-Sum, Flipside became the first Generation 4 story with major progress being made on it.
Designs for Magic Touch employees slowly came in over time. Lee was based on someone Gaboza used to work with, and was added to the story after receiving permission to use his likeness as a character. Ideas for Ichika came when listening to Ado's cover of Aishite Aishite Aishite. The emotion Ado put into her voice, specifically in the chorus, gave Gaboza the idea for a lovesick yandere character.
So far, Flipside has 15 chapters written, with Gaboza estimating the story to land anywhere around 55-60 chapters in total.
On January 6, 2025, scripting began officially, merging chapters 0 and 1 into just 'Chapter 1', and releasing Chapter 2. Chapters came out periodically (but inconsistently) for all of 2025 (up to Chapter 9 being finished), until Gaboza prioritized the script more in 2026, promising to stick to a previously-failed release schedule called "Flipside Fridays", where, as the name implies, the Flipside script would update on Friday.
So far, Gaboza has kept Flipside Friday for 5/6 Fridays in 2026, for a total success rate of ~83%.
