Characters
*While Strings of Fate does have more characters than these, it's important to only list the major ones.
Strings of Fate is the first story in Generation 3, and the longest Gaboza story to date. Its script spans 250 chapters, took three years to write (2/26/2020 - 2/26/2023), and has an insane word total of 132,830.
Below will be a summary of Strings of Fate, but before that's read, it's highly recommended to experience the story in full first.
Strings of Fate is a supernatural/action story, starring Chloe Duflora, who has been affected the titular Strings of Fate curse. The story consists of 3 sagas, which are split into 8 arcs, which are split into 250 chapters.
Chloe Duflora was created on September 17, 2019. The idea for Strings of Fate as a curse was created in December 2019. The Strings of Fate script started on February 26, 2020, and completed on February 26, 2023.
A failed Strings of Fate WEBTOON run started in early 2020, before being deleted in 2021. The new, current WEBTOON run started on March 13, 2022, before being put on an indefinite hiatus in favor of Second Chance sometime in 2024. Around the same time, work on Strings of Fate א began, which is a separate version of the Strings of Fate script that aims to cut out fluff, fix minor mistakes, and make chapters longer (mostly by combining previous, short ones).
Plot Summary
Curse Saga (Chapters 1-68) (Chapters 1-26, א)
The curse saga covers the initial story of Chloe and Carson trying to get the curse removed from them. This saga consists of three arcs. Spoilers may be prevalent from here on out, so continue at your own risk.
Curse Arc (Chapters 1-19) (Chapters 1-7, א)
The curse arc is a fairly straightforward arc. It serves to set up the Duflora family's dynamic, and introduce the concept of magic and curses. Carson Duflora and Carla Vives serve as the arc's main antagonists.
Chloe is introduced as an airheaded teenage girl with a damaged relationship with her brother. Despite her best efforts, he seems to want nothing to do with her. After her brother, Carson, humiliates her by shoving her down in front of his friends, Chloe runs away and encounters Carla Vives. Carla tricks Chloe into inheriting the Strings of Fate curse from her, thus setting off the events of the rest of the story. Chloe and Carson eventually find Carla. Carla, revealed to be a good person who acted out of desperation, promises the twins that she will help them to get their curse removed.
Colombia Arc (Chapters 20-49) (Chapters 8-19, א)
The Colombia arc consists of the twins starting their road trip with Carla. Miguel Aguado is introduced as the arc's antagonist almost instantly, and fails numerous times. Chloe and Carson are also awakened in this arc.
Cali Arc (Chapters 50-68)
Post-Colombia Arc (Chapters 20-26, א)
After a long drive to a different part of Colombia, the twins take this opportunity to rest. Carla decides that since 'Strings of Fate' is an easy spell, the twins should have no trouble reciting it and passing their curse to someone else. She decides to send them home, but is attacked by Miguel last-minute. Chloe takes initiative to help Carla out, and Carson follows. They miss their flight and agree to stick with Carla. Miguel's defeat leaves his brain in an almost dead state... and a bigger force is alerted of the twins.
God's Hand Pendant Saga (Chapters 69-136) (Chapters 27-56, א)
Carla tells the twins about an artifact that can boost the wearer's magical power, known as the God's Hand Pendant. It's held by a group of insanely powerful magic users known as the seven sages.
England Arc (Chapters 69-87) (Chapters 27-34, א)
(Referred to as the Dr. Buzz Arc in the script.)
Our group of three heads to England on a plane, where Dr. Buzz and Rhiannon are conveniently in the row in front of them. Our heroes avoid being caught by the simple lucky coincidence that Rhiannon never looks in the row behind her. During this arc, Chloe gets lost, and is helped by Dr. Buzz, before realizing that he's working with "the bad guys." Chloe is reluctant to fight at first, but after Dr. Buzz is relentless with Carla and Carson, she takes action and delivers the finishing blow... with a car.
France Arc (Chapters 88-114) (Chapters 35-45, א)
(Referred to as the Rhiannon Arc in the script.)
Rumor has it the God's Hand Pendant is in France, so after defeating Dr. Buzz, our heroes make their way there. Rhiannon greets them at the Eiffel Tower, and proves to be a much more sufficient roadblock than Dr. Buzz was. She demonstrates her magical prowess by sending our trio flying, as well as keeping storms active for a good portion of the arc. Carson and Carla are beat up, but despite her shared damage with her brother, Chloe endures through the pain and continues fighting, eventually buying just enough time for a spell that Carla left to take effect.
Italy Arc (Chapters 115-136) (Chapters 46-56, א)
The search for the God's Hand Pendant has been narrowed down to Italy. Our heroes spot Dr. Buzz perusing the area, when he's distracted by a poster. Chloe takes an interest in it, and even eventually meets the man on the poster, a man named Alessandro Romano. He knows of them being magic users, and offers them to be his bodyguards for a few hours; with a handsome reward in it for them if they succeed. The show commemorating the artist's birthday goes off without a hitch; with the twins guarding the stage, and Carla being backstage to pick up anyone the twins may have missed. Dr. Buzz shows up near the end, and our trio finds out that Alessandro is a sage. Sages are a group of seven people that are the best at their respective magic type, and Alessandro is the Musical sage, Bossfight. Carla focuses on keeping Dr. Buzz and Bossfight at bay, while the twins run off with the pendant. They end up taking it for themselves and fleeing. Disappointed at his group's failures, Shem sends in his trump card, Rosanna, to keep watch over Egypt, which is the next destination due to it holding a key component for his immortality spell. Bossfight is visited by the Fire sage, Blackpink, and after being ridiculed, he moves on to Egypt with her.
Middle East Saga (Chapters 137-250) (Chapters 57-113, א)
Egypt Arc (Chapters 137-197) (Chapters 57-87, א)
Two weeks from where we last left off, our trio is in Egypt. The rest of the sages are properly introduced: Marillion (Mind), Aerosmith (Air), Electroman (Electric), and Toto (Nature). Additionally, Tallulah, the woman who awakened Chloe and Carson, is there. She's the Water sage. Even after two weeks, our trio still has possession of the pendant. However, they've been steering clear of the sages. Tallulah, being the oldest, is the leader of the sages, splits them into three groups. The first consists of herself, Marillion, and Aerosmith, where Aerosmith tries and fails to court Marillion. The second consists of Bossfight and Blackpink, and the third consists of Electroman and Toto. Electroman's group ends up ambushed by Rosanna, where she hits Toto with a strong Fire attack from behind; Toto is almost immediately incapacitated, and uses his sage spell, Yggdrasil, as a backup plan. Rosanna and Electroman fight for a bit, and after keeping her at bay, Electroman takes Toto and flees. Yggdrasil is still active, however, and Rosanna uses it to power up. She rests under the tree, and Aerosmith comes to visit her and talk, revealing that he plans to betray the sages.
Carson, fatigued, walks away from his group. By complete surprise, he finds Miguel, who is alive. Miguel frantically explains that he no longer harbors any resentment toward Carson or his group. Miguel was angry at Carla for cursing them all those years ago, and when, in an act of desperation, he asked if Shem could remove the spell, Shem amplified Miguel's anger toward Carla to a point where Miguel had gone insane. Then, Shem offered Miguel that if he was able to kill Carla, then the curse could be removed. Miguel set off to do so, with part of Shem's being implanted into him. When Miguel ultimately failed, Shem tried to kill him remotely; but due to Miguel not having full belief in Shem, the spell only partially worked, leaving Miguel almost comatose. When he came to, he realized that the curse was now gone, and now, only wishes to apologize to Carla. Carson, annoyed and craving alone time, gets Miguel to leave... reluctantly. He eventually has a run-in with Marillion, who questions him about the pendant. Marillion attacks Carson, but Miguel helps him escape. Grateful for Miguel's help, Carson decides to assist him.
Meanwhile, Chloe meets with Shem, who tries to convince her to remove the Strings of Fate spell that's affecting her and her brother. Shem reveals that Chloe inherited the spell from Carla Vives and Miguel Aguado, who cast it years ago. He offers to remove it, but Chloe refuses. Meanwhile, Carson and Miguel encounter Rosanna, who attacks them. Carson manages to fend her off using a new magic technique. Later, Chloe, Rhiannon, Carla, Carson, and Miguel discuss teaming up to stop Rosanna's plan to dry up the Nile River. Despite the challenges ahead, they decide to work together. Amidst the discussion, Chloe shares a lighthearted story about how she got her ear gauges. Chloe considers healing her ear piercings, sparking a discussion about personal symbols of the past. They strategize against Rosanna and Aerosmith, planning their approach for combat. As the confrontation unfolds, tensions rise. Blackpink intervenes to assist Electroman against Rosanna's attacks. Meanwhile, Marillion demands the return of the pendant, adding more pressure to the situation. Chloe faces off against Rosanna in a fierce battle, while the rest of the team watches closely. They work together to confront the sages, but conflicts and doubts arise among them.
In the ongoing clash against Rosanna and Aerosmith, Rosanna launches fireballs at Rhiannon and Chloe. Rhiannon keeps them at bay with Air while Chloe braces herself with a determined smile. Despite Rosanna's close-range attack, Chloe holds her ground. As the battle intensifies, tensions rise between Rhiannon and Rosanna, revealing deeper motivations and loyalties. Meanwhile, Aerosmith and Marillion engage in their own struggle, with Carson and Carla caught in the middle. The fight escalates as each side unleashes their powers, and the outcome becomes increasingly uncertain. Chloe faces Rosanna head-on, using her Magnet Warrior skills to block and counterattack. In another front, Carson confronts Aerosmith, determined to make a stand despite the overwhelming odds. In the midst of chaos, Chloe and Carson find themselves overwhelmed by their adversaries' relentless assault. Despite their efforts, injuries mount, and their allies are incapacitated one by one. As the battle reaches its climax, Carla steps up to confront Rosanna and Aerosmith, revealing her powerful Medusa ability. With the situation hanging by a thread, Carla's bold move puts the villains on the defensive. In a fierce battle, Aerosmith faces Carla, trying to avoid turning completely into stone. As the petrification spreads, he resolves to fight, creating a sandstorm and attacking her. However, Carla uses a decoy and counterattacks, having a snake bite him and accelerating his petrification. Aerosmith's new air-made wings give him a brief advantage, but Carla traps him with a cactus, causing more petrification. Finally, she reveals that he's standing on a spot that she initially triggered her Medusa ability, causing the spot to start fully petrifying Aerosmith as Carla collapses from exhaustion.
Meanwhile, Miguel is battling Rosanna, but is quickly overwhelmed. Just as Rosanna prepares to finish him off, Chloe intervenes with newfound powers and glowing eyes. She strips Rosanna of a powerful pendant and aggressively fights her, prompting Marillion and Blackpink to recognize Chloe's transformation into a new sage. Chloe's relentless assault on Rosanna showcases her new strength and determination. Carson arrives and confronts Chloe, recalling their troubled past and the strain in their relationship. Chloe, with her eyes still glowing and tears flowing, accuses Carson of causing their issues. Carson tries to reason with her, but Chloe remains combative. Their confrontation turns physical, with Carson defending himself and expressing his resentment towards Chloe's intrusion into his life. Chloe snaps out of her trance, and attempts to reconcile, but Carson pushes her away, insisting they fight to settle their differences. The confrontation escalates as Carson vents his frustrations, revealing his desire for independence and blaming Chloe for forcing her way into his life. Despite her attempts to console him, Carson insists on a battle to resolve their issues, leading to a final showdown between the siblings, both determined to get everything out of their systems and settle their long-standing grievances. In a flashback, Dylan Duflora returns home to his wife, Karen, who excitedly reveals she's pregnant. They joyfully discuss baby names, focusing on flower names, before eventually switching to the name 'Chloe'. Weeks later, a doctor informs them they’re having twins, a boy and a girl, filling them with immense joy. Months later, Karen gives birth to Chloe and Carson. The story fast-forwards to when the twins are five, showcasing their close bond. Karen goes to the store with Chloe, leaving Carson disappointed. Later, Dylan comforts Carson, explaining that Karen's attention to Chloe stems from lacking female companionship growing up. Carson and Chloe’s strong bond is evident when he gets water for her in the night but overhears his parents discussing Karen's unintentional favoritism. This makes Carson feel neglected but also shows Dylan's effort to balance attention. The next chapter highlights the twins' relationship, with Dylan sneaking them cookies and milk, leading to Chloe expressing her desire to learn baking. They reaffirm their bond with a pinkie promise, vowing to stay best friends forever. Returning to the present, Carson and Chloe fight in the desert, mirroring their deep-seated sibling rivalry and reconciliation. Their battle is intense and emotionally charged, but they eventually make peace, realizing they need to support each other. Meanwhile, Rosanna fights Marillion, showing her ruthless strength. Carson and Chloe join forces against Rosanna, using their abilities to counter her attacks. Despite their injuries, they coordinate well, exploiting Rosanna’s weaknesses. The battle is brutal, but the siblings’ unity strengthens their resolve. As they struggle, Chloe's hunger distracts her momentarily, but Carson’s encouragement keeps her focused. Rosanna's relentless assault injures them, but they persist, determined to protect each other and defeat her. Rosanna recalls her orders from Shem, highlighting her lethal mission against the sages.
Rosanna attacks Chloe and Carson, struggling with Shem's conflicting orders to kill all sages but spare them. Chloe, realizing Rosanna's emotional state affects her magic, uses a sand mallet to injure her. Carson and Chloe work together, ultimately defeating Rosanna with a powerful sand attack, leaving all three unconscious. Marillion and Blackpink confirm Rosanna's defeat. In a hospital in Egypt, Carson wakes up injured, with Miguel updating him on their condition. They witness Rhiannon leaving despite severe injuries, thanking them before flying away. Elsewhere, Marillion and Lady Tallulah strip Rosanna of her magical powers, sealing her third eye. Carson checks on Chloe, but finds her bed empty, and grows worried about her. Chloe awakens, seeing Rosanna in distress from her lost powers, leaving Carson concerned about her whereabouts.
Post-Egypt Arc (Chapters 198-207) (Chapters 88-92, א)
After the intense events in Egypt, the characters find themselves dealing with the fallout of their actions and losses. Rosanna, having lost her magical powers, is in emotional turmoil, while Chloe is disoriented and trying to piece together what happened during the battle. The team learns that Shem, the antagonist, seeks a new body to continue his reign, and they prepare for the challenges ahead in Israel.
Israel Arc (Chapters 208-250) (Chapters 93-113, א)
In the Israel arc, the narrative shifts to the characters preparing for the climactic encounter with Shem, who is seeking a new body to continue his reign. The story delves into the rich history and the spiritual significance of Israel, highlighting the concentration of magical power in this region due to its historical and religious importance. The group splits up with Chloe deciding to stay behind with the sages to train and become stronger, promising to reunite with them in Israel.
As the characters navigate through Israel, they face numerous challenges, including dealing with local magic users allied with Shem. The group, now reunited, makes their way to Jerusalem, the epicenter of magical power and the most dangerous place for magic users. Along the way, tensions rise as strategic alliances are considered and rejected, and they encounter hostile magic users, forcing them into battles that test their skills and resolve. The arc builds up to the impending confrontation with Shem, as the team prepares for the final showdown, with the fate of their world hanging in the balance.
The heroes engage Shem in an intense battle, using their combined magical abilities, but his new body proves incredibly powerful. Rhiannon arrives and helps Shem escape with a tornado that scatters the group. Separated and regrouping, the heroes realize Rhiannon's relationship with Shem is deeply personal rather than purely antagonistic. During a confrontation, Carla employs Medusa, which slowly poisons her, eventually leading to her death. As she dies in Miguel's arms, she creates a butterfly as her final gift to the world. The battle continues with various confrontations until the final showdown, where Chloe uses Strings of Fate to link Shem to Carla's butterfly. When Miguel crushes the butterfly, Shem is defeated and falls as Rhiannon rushes to him, and Chloe is simultaneously freed from her curse. The surviving heroes experience an overwhelming mixture of grief and relief, crying as they process their hard-won freedom and the loss of their loved ones. The remaining sages—Blackpink, Bossfight, and Marillion—prepare to return to their respective regions to watch over the world, giving Chloe time to recover. Carson calls his worried father, Dylan, to let his parents know he and Chloe are coming home. At the airport, Karen and Dylan emotionally reunite with their children, who promise to explain everything. Carson demonstrates his newfound magic by levitating a coin as they begin to share their incredible story, with the Duflora family finally back together and the magical world forever changed.
